Doctoral programs
You have two different options for doing a doctorate in Arabic or Islamic Studies in Bayreuth: in a structured graduate program or freely at the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature.
Many doctoral students opt for a structured international doctoral program in English. In Bayreuth, this is offered as part of the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS). In order to be able to do a doctorate at BIGSAS, you can apply at any time and first have to go through a selection process. If you are interested, please contact one of the possible supervisors with your project application and CV before you apply. In Islamic Studies those are Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Seesemann, Prof. Dr. Britta Frede or Dr. Franz Kogelmann, in Arabic Studies it is Jun-Prof. Dr. Valentina Serreli. Before you get in touch with your potential supervisor, it is advisable to look at the research profiles first in order to find a suitable supervisor.
However, you can also opt for a free doctorate at the faculty. In this case, please apply with your project application and CV directly to the potential supervisor: Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Seesemann, Prof. Dr. Britta Frede or PD Dr. Georg Leube for Islamic Studies, Jun-Prof. Dr. Valentina Serreli for Arabic Studies.
It is advisable to apply for a scholarship to finance your doctoral studies. Numerous foundations offer opportunities (see below).
